Customise your Website by choosing a new theme (design)
There is a vast choice of WordPress themes available – something for virtually every type of business. Some are free, some cost a small price. WordPress web software creates beautiful websites and blogs. The core software is built by hundreds of community volunteers, and when you’re ready for more there are thousands of plugins and themes available to transform your site into almost thousands of plugins, widgets and themes; WordPress is limited only by your imagination.
Starting with a good theme is essential.
Here are a few tips:
1. First of all, pay for your theme – in life you ‘get what you pay for’ so those free/cheap themes are not going to be as good as the themes that cost between £40 to £100.
2. Choose a design that is appropriate for the quantity and style of your content, for instance, if you are a photographer you’ll want something very visual.
3. Is your theme ‘responsive’? This means will it adjust to the size of screen it’s being viewed on. All sites can be viewed on small screens like mobiles, however, being fully responsive will make the experience a lot smoother.
4. How many have they sold? Themes that have high sales tend to have better support and ongoing development.
A Little History
WordPress was born out of a desire for an elegant, well-architectured personal publishing system built on PHP and MySQL and licensed under the GPLv2 (or later). It is the official successor of b2/cafelog. WordPress is fresh software, but its roots and development go back to 2001. It is a mature and stable product.
